With over 40 years in business, Alpha Lewis Signs has a rich history beginning with its establishment in 1955 by John Lewis. John began his signwriting journey writing for Myer and Darrel Lea Chocolates. Not long after, John mastered the craft of signwriting with various companies such as ‘Filmer & Clare Signs’, McCabe signs & Richardson Signs.
In 1969 Lewis signs partnered with Peatling in Preston. An image of the team can be seen below.
Their work consisted of magnificent hand written signs around Melbourne. An image of the Peatling and Lewis van driving around Melbourne can be seen below.
The late 80’s started to see changes in the industry with the introduction of computers and vinyl cut decals. Previous to this, handwritten signs and traditional brushwork was still the main way their signage was being produced. The image below shows the difference in the car decal over the years.
The 90’s saw Alpha Lewis formed. Alpha Lewis moved to a new premises in 242 Dryburgh St North Melbourne (current location). An image of the 90’s logo and signage has been included below.
Now with the third generation at Alpha Lewis, we are continuing to grow with exciting times ahead!
