We've been proudly Melbourne since 1969.
- 1955
John Lewis starts out as a ticket writer for Myer and Darrell Lea Chocolates.
- Early 1960s
John moves into traditional signwriting with well-known Melbourne companies, including Filmer & Clarke Signs, McCabe Signs and Carroll & Richardson Signs.
- 1969
John founds Peatling & Lewis Signs, with a small factory and team in Preston. The business later becomes John Lewis Signs, then Lewis Signs, before taking its current name, Alpha Lewis Signs.
- 1980
John's son Paul (current owner) joins as an apprentice. Signs are still painted by hand with traditional brushwork.
- Early 1980s
We start working with North Melbourne Football Club. They're still with us more than 40 years later.
- 1984
Lombard comes on board. Four decades on, we're still making their signs.
- Late 1980s
Computers and cut vinyl start to change the industry. We take on the new tools and keep the brush skills.
- Early 1990s
We settle into our home at 242 Dryburgh Street, North Melbourne.
- 1990s
Queen Victoria Market and the City of Melbourne become clients. More than 30 years later, both still are.
- Early 2000s
Kim, Paul's wife and co-owner, joins the business in an official role.
- Early 2010s
Paul's son Nic joins, making it three generations of the Lewis family.
- 2021
Paul and Kim each receive a Lord Mayor's Commendation from the City of Melbourne, recognising 25+ years as small business proprietors and their dedicated contribution to Melbourne and its people.
- 2023
We launch Signee®, our range of ready-made and customisable signs for retail and hospitality.
- 2024
We introduce greener alternatives where they suit the job, including PVC-free films and vinyl and recycled signage materials, and make a shift towards more sustainable manufacturing and installation.
- 2026
We continue to innovate in an evolving industry, adding our first 3D printer to complement our existing fleet of machinery.
- Today
Countless projects later, big and small, plenty of the clients we met along the way are still with us decades on. That's the part we're proudest of.
